Your treatment - what to expect from your sports massage

I am trained in sports and remedial massage as well as a number of additional manual therapy and soft tissue techniques, often now referred to as Soft Tissue Therapy.

This style of treatment tends to be deeper and often more intense than other massage therapies and will often include stretching and strengthening techniques.

However the treatment will always be tailored to you and your individual requirements. It doesn't have to be painful!

The treatment process:

  1. Consultation - all 1st treatments start with a consultation, including a brief medical history and injury history form. Both of which will help guide and inform your massage treatment
  2. Assessment - your massage treatment will usually include an assessment, to help me understand how you are moving and where any pain and / or restrictions are within the body. The assessment may be carried out alongside actual treatment
  3. Treatment - your treatment may include some or all of the following techniques:
  • Sports massage
  • Trigger point therapy - to relieve tender spots within a tight muscle
  • Myofascial release - to target restrictions and tension within fascia
  • Muscle energy techniques (MET) - to stretch and strengthen tight muscles
  • Soft tissue release - a stretching technique to target tight muscles
  • NAT® for shoulder conditions (Neil Asher Technique)
  • Deep tissue frictions - to help break down scar tissue
  • Ultrasound therapy - to help accelerate healing and can be used at all stages of injury repair
  • Kinesiology taping - flexible tape to support and enhance movement
  • Rehabilitation exercises
  • Education on self massage techniques for in between treatments - using a foam roller or spikey massage ball

Your 1st appointment

I recommend booking a 60 minute session for your first appointment, this allows plenty of time for consultation, assessment and then treatment.

Follow up appointments can then be booked for 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes, as required.

I also recommend bringing a pair of loose fitting shorts to your treatment.

Can anyone have sports and remedial massage?

Treatments are appropriate for almost everyone and they are always tailored to the individual. There are however certain medical conditions or occasions where certain soft tissue techniques are not advised and may be detrimental. Please inform me of any medical conditions, prior to your treatment. Examples of such conditions are:

  • Muscle, tendon or ligament ruptures in acute stages - alternative treatments may be possible, such as ultrasound therapy and kinesiology taping - so please contact me to discuss
  • Skin infections or open wounds
  • Fever and cold or flu symptoms
  • Cancer or tumours
  • Haemophilia

If you are currently being treated by another health care professional, it may be necessary to obtain their consent before a treatment can be commenced, again, please contact me to discuss.
